August 2011
For Microsoft Access, SQL Server,
Visual Studio .NET, and VB6 Professionals
Hi
Everyone,
We are very pleased to announce the release of Total Visual CodeTools
2010 for Office/Access 2010 and earlier versions. Thanks to all of you
who participated in our preview program and provided feedback.
In the past month, Microsoft released a service pack for Office 2010
that caused some problems for the 64-bit version of Access. If you
didn't catch it on our blog or
Facebook page, check out the information
below including the release of updates for the 64-bit versions of Total
Access Emailer and Total Access Statistics 2010.
In mid-July,
I had the pleasure of participating at the
Microsoft Worldwide
Partner Conference in Los Angeles. Microsoft announced
many significant initiatives with Office 365, Azure cloud computing, LightSwitch
for Visual Studio, Windows Phone, Xbox Kinect, SQL Server, and CRM to address their customer
needs and competitive threats. Visit their website to see some of the
keynote speeches including a chat by Sir Richard Branson.
Please also visit our new
Microsoft Access
Developer Center with many resources for Access database
developers.
All the best,
Luke Chung
President

Microsoft
Access 2010, 64-bit Version, Service Pack 1 Cannot Run ACCDE Files from
Original Release
Microsoft released service pack 1 (SP1) of Office 2010 late June
2011. Unfortunately, the Access 64-bit version in SP1 will not run ACCDE
files created with the original release of Access 2010 64-bit version.
This does not impact the 32-bit version.
For more information, visit our
blog discussion on the topic.
Updates for
the 64-bit Versions of Total Access Emailer 2010 and Total
Access Statistics 2010
Due to the ACCDE compatibility problems, we've released updates for the
Access 2010 64-bit versions of
Total Access Emailer and
Total Access
Statistics.
Existing customers should receive an email with download instructions.
The
trial versions are also updated: Total Access Emailer and
Total Access
Statistics.
On
a related note, the FAQ for Total Access Emailer now explains why the
64-bit runtime distribution files are not installed even though the
operating system is 64-bit.

Total Access Analyzer Product Review
Geoff Hollander of Northwest Database Services and the Portland
Access User Group wrote a
review of our
Total Access Analyzer
product. He provides a nice discussion of how it finds ways to improve
his Access applications:
"I always thought that I was thorough about going
through an application and cleaning up loose ends, but Total
Access Analyzer proved: I was wrong and I probably won't call another
application complete until Total Access Analyzer gives it the OK."
He also suggests how the documentation it generates and its reports are
a business opportunity:
"Selling a documentation package generated by Total Access Analyzer
for your application is a great way to add a training-free, trouble-free
and reasonably priced profit center to the work you are already
performing!....Total Access Analyzer is a solid product that any Access
developer should have in their toolbox; and one that will pay for itself
in short order."

Microsoft
Access Database System Administration
Many people deploy Microsoft Access database applications and neglect to
provide the system administration necessary to properly support and
maintain them over time. This becomes critical as the data it contains
grows and becomes mission critical. Often, when something goes wrong, IT
"professionals" are brought in to discover that basic system administration
are not in place. Rather than blaming the people involved, the Microsoft
Access technology is considered at fault. We can do better.

Tip:
Replace the Paperclip Icon of Attachment Fields with a Column Name in
Microsoft Access Tables in ACCDB Databases
In Access 2007/2010 databases (ACCDBs), the Attachment field type
lets you attach files (documents, files, etc.) to records in your
database. When you view a
table in Datasheet view, attachment fields show a paperclip icon in the
column header. See how that can be a problem and how to
replace the
paperclip icon with your own caption.
