Paradox Frequently Asked Questions
Paradox DOS won't run under Windows 95. What's wrong?
You most likely have too much memory. Paradox DOS was not designed to
handle more than 16 Meg of RAM. To fix this, use the -extk command when you
start Paradox to restrict the amount of memory it sees. For instance:
C:\PARADOX\PARADOX.EXE -extk 1600
When running Paradox DOS under Windows 95, Paradox crashes or freezes the
second time I shell out to DOS (or view a graph). What's wrong?
This can be caused by a conflict with a buggy Symantec file. If you have
Norton Utilities installed, this is the most likely cause. For more
information, visit the Symantec web site and look for information on the
SYMEVNT shared files.

Some of my FMS Paradox DOS add-ins won't work on Pentium II machines.
Why?
Some of our products, ParaDate, ParaStat, ParaTrak, and ParaView, have
portions written in Turbo Pascal. Turbo Pascal, written over 10 years ago,
has a bug that prevents it from working properly on today's faster machines.
There are two places where this occurs:
The installation program fails.
This is simple to workaround. The Paradox DOS add-in installations are
very simple. They just copy a self-extracting zip file to your directory
and run it. To bypass the installation program, simply:
- Create a directory where you want to install the program.
- Copy the files on the disk to that directory (you don't need the
INSTALL.EXE file).
- Run the EXE file with the -d command. For instance, for ParaTrak,
simply type at the DOS prompt: TRAK -d
- You can then delete the EXE file.
The program doesn't run.
If the program fails or hangs, contact our support department for a
new EXE. We recently compiled new EXE files with the fixed Turbo Pascal
bug. The new EXE file can be e-mailed to you for no charge. Contact
support@fmsinc.com with your name, address, product name, product version,
and serial number.
